The Spark: A Single Act of Kindness

Our story begins not in a boardroom, but under the sprawling shade of an old mango tree in the heart of Gomon. It was there, in 2023, that our founder, Swaga Richard, then a first-year university student home for the holidays, met a young boy named David.

David was hunched over a single, tattered textbook, his brow furrowed in concentration. He was trying to teach himself primary-level mathematics, his fingers tracing numbers in the dust. When Richard offered to help, he discovered that David had fallen behind in school because his family couldn't afford the required materials, and there was no one to help him with his homework. His dream of becoming a teacher was already being threatened by circumstances beyond his control.

That afternoon, what started as a simple tutoring session for one child, soon drew a small crowd of curious children from the neighborhood. They all shared similar stories and struggles. Richard, along with his friends Kemigisa Noeline, Onyango Benard, Odeke Patrick and Mungueconi Jerry began spending their afternoons under that mango tree, sharing knowledge, using improvised materials, and igniting a spark of hope.

The Realization: A Community's Silent Need

As the weeks passed, the group noticed another, quieter need. While tutoring the children, they often saw Mzee John, an elderly man living alone, struggling to fetch water. They learned that many elders in Gomon, who had once been the pillars of the community, now felt isolated and unsupported, their own families having moved away for work.

The vision expanded. It was no longer just about education for the children. It was about building a holistic support system for the entire community—nurturing the young and caring for the old, creating a cycle of respect and support. This was the moment the Gomon Youths Foundation was truly born—from a simple act of helping one child into a profound commitment to uplift an entire community.
